Yet Another Snowstorm

It's hard to believe it snowed again, on St. Patrick's Day.  It has certainly been a wintery winter.  I'll be making a trip sometime soon that should produce many interesting photos without snow.  There will be no snow.  Soon.

A Little Less Contrast...

I took a foggy walk around Heinz on Friday.  Tough birding when you can't see any color.  There's a cardinal in the second to last photo.

Snowy Walk

A walk through 10" of untrammeled snow.  Well, mostly untrammeled, there were little foot prints here and there.

January

Some images from my first walk of the new year.  It took some time to get around to thanks to orientations and freezing cold temperatures but it was well worth the wait.

Also Not a Bird

This is also not a bird but how can anyone resist a...4??...seems to be 1 on one side and 3 on the other...point buck leaping through a snowy wood.  Not me obviously.

The Young Ones

I can't wait to get my zoom lens back from the repair shop.  The I saw at least 5 Green Herons this morning and could have gotten some great shots.  On the other hand this fawn was so close I'd have been out of luck.

Hildacy Farm Preserve

I took an impromptu walk around Hildacy Farm Preserve today.  Olivia missed the bus so it was the perfect opportunity to sneak in a walk.  (Olivia preferred to sit in the car doing math homework so I was on my own.)  I saw three hawks making a huge racket.  I think all three were Red-shouldered Hawks like this guy (last photo) but they were back lit so I can't be sure.  It's not the best photo but it's the best I got for today and it helped me confirm my id so here it is.  I also saw the shaggiest deer I can ever remember seeing.

Hideout

Judging by the droppings this is a favorite hideout for deer. LOTS of deer. Probably the same deer that shared the Lyme's disease with our poor beagle. Soon it will be impassible to humans. But until then I'll sneak around with the camera.

Winter at Heinz NWR

And this is what I can do with fully manual focus!! You know, get the deer in focus through all those branches. There is a lot of gumbling going on here about the snow. 15" on the ground and it snows a few flakes everyday. But, I will freely admit, I love the snow!

Hiking Heinz

Olivia and I took a long walk around the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. It was a beautiful, warm day and lots of birds and animals were out enjoying it. Just as we got back to the parking lot we saw two young deer.

After nibbling his way out of the brush this guy snuck past me. I could have reached out and touched him as he went by. Just after passing me he took off like a shot.
