Killdeer in Action
Saturday we went to Heislerville Wildlife Management Area in New Jersey for a bike ride, a ride in which we were tormented by flies. Early in the ride we stopped alone the road to view the birds. This Killdeer had chosen to nest less than twelve inches from the road, an unfortunate choice that may result in her nest being run over. People frequently pull off the road here to crab or bird. But the happy result, for me anyway, was witnessing her protective displays including fanning out all her feathers, running from the nest, and feigning a broken wing.

In the Trees
My first visit to Matts Landing in New Jersey bowled me over. For a minute I thought I was in Florida. A small stand of trees in the middle of a pond/lake/impoundment was FULL of birds. Big and small egrets, Night Heron, and Cormorants. I saw quite a few territory disputes and several birds bringing in new sticks for their nests. A spot to keep an eye on for sure.
