Enroute

We drove out to Lancaster today to visit a super fish store and I had designs on a walk...until I went outside.  The wind was way too bitter to enjoy walking anywhere!

We are having a post birthday (mine) cozy snow day.  Perfect for sitting about recovering from a very nice party.

I Almost Forgot

I can't believe I almost forgot about these fungus photos!  I was just writing a description of this blog, listing in 20 words or less what it's about.  Namely it's about what inspires me which I then proceeded to list: birds, trees, rocks etc. but I forgot about fungus and water and plants and so on and so on.  If asked what I'm allergic to I'll say "anything that flies through the air and goes up your nose."  I think I collect inspiration from the world in much the same way.  What am I inspired by?  Pretty much everything I see.  So this is a blog about what I see.

Party!

If the feeder is full I've seen these guys eating away from about 6pm to 6am.  I'm not sure if it's the same squirrels or if they take it in rotation.

The Great Outdoors

I finally got back to Heinz NWR and what a beautiful day!  These starlings were clearly enjoying it.  The sun!!! I just can't even say how much I love the sun.  Looks like tomorrow might be the last of it for a while.

Trenton Doyle Hancock

Somehow with the semester ending, Christmas shopping, painting, and visiting NYC and Virginia I have not taken a single picture outside since the fog photos I took on the 10th.  I plan to change that tomorrow assuming the sun comes out.  In the mean time here's an image from Trenton Doyle Hancock's show at James Cohen Gallery, "...And Then It All Came Back To Me."

Wallpaper

Designs by Joy Waldinger

Designs by Katherine Videira

More artwork, this time from my color theory class's final assignment.  I had them read the short story The Yellow Wallpaper (1899) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman which describes a woman's decent into madness helped along by the wallpaper in her bedroom.  Each student made two 8"x8" panels from cut paper using the same 4 colors and the same design.  The idea was to alter the emotional response the design created just by altering the proportions of the 4 colors.  I created the repeated "wallpaper" myself after scanning in their designs because they didn't have enough time to do it themselves.  As a result the repeats aren't perfect.  Next time I'll shave some time off the early assignments and have them print out a copy of the pattern repeated.

Watercolor on Paper

I taught two classes this semester which took a lot out of me but still left me with plenty of time for the studio.  The studio gives me lots and lots to think about but not a lot to say.  Hence the general lack of commentary over the past 3 months.  These are a few of the watercolor paintings I made in the past few weeks.

Al Loving: Torn Canvas at Gary Snyder

I made a special trip to NYC today to see Al Loving: Torn Canvas at Gary Snyder Gallery before it closes on the 15th.  I'm glad I did and now I can't wait to get back into the studio.

Fog

The past few days we've been very busy with indoor activities.  And it's a good thing because the weather has been pretty dismal.  I took this shot at 1:30pm this afternoon.
